Manchester City delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, marking their first game since being found guilty of 114 financial rule breaches. The match carried unusual significance given the Premier League's ongoing investigation into City's conduct between 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.
Liverpool supporters, still resentful over three controversial title finishes (2013-14, 2018-19, 2021-22), created a hostile atmosphere. Despite this, City showcased champion's mentality, with Erling Haaland starring and new manager Enzo Maresca praising his team's composure.
Maresca emphasized focusing on controllable elements: 'We need to make our own noise by winning games... I cannot control things outside football, so why stress?' Haaland echoed this sentiment, calling it a moment players will remember.
The victory extends City's perfect start to the season, maintaining their three-point league lead. However, the win's significance remains uncertain pending potential sanctions including relegation or record points deductions as City appeals the verdict.
