Manchester City have secured England left-back Niamh Charles from WSL rivals Chelsea for £500,000 on a three-year contract. The 27-year-old departs Stamford Bridge after six seasons, 173 appearances, and a trophy haul that includes five league titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups. She also featured in the 2021 Women's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

Charles arrives with 34 Lionesses caps and the distinction of converting a penalty in the Euro 2025 final shootout victory over Spain. She replaces Spain international Leila Ouahabi, who joined Chicago Stars FC, and will wear the number 21 shirt. The move addresses her need for consistent minutes to cement a place in Sarina Wiegman's World Cup squad next summer.

The signing continues Manchester City's aggressive summer rebuild following their first WSL crown in a decade. They have already added England forward Beth Mead from Arsenal and, crucially, retained top scorer Khadija Shaw on a new four-year deal after she appeared destined to leave on a free transfer. Director of football Therese Sjogran called Charles a "huge positive" whose best years remain ahead.

City now possess genuine depth at left-back and a squad built to challenge domestically and in Europe. Charles's Champions League experience and winning mentality directly address the gaps exposed in last season's European campaign, while her versatility allows tactical flexibility across the back line.
