Karlsson Loan Cut Short, Moves to Utrecht

Bologna have recalled Jesper Karlsson from his loan at Aberdeen, ending his spell with the Dons. The Swedish forward will join Utrecht for the remainder of the season, with the Dutch club holding an option to purchase him permanently. Karlsson, 27, scored six goals in 26 appearances for Aberdeen after arriving last summer.

Karlsson’s move to Pittodrie was meant to reunite him with former Elfsborg manager Jimmy Thelin, who was sacked this month. His parent club, Bologna, paid AZ Alkmaar £10m for him in 2023, making his loan to a struggling Aberdeen side a calculated risk. The recall clause was always part of the agreement.

Aberdeen sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel confirmed the club was prepared for this outcome. Karlsson thanked the fans and staff for his time in Scotland. The Dons must now regroup and find a replacement for their top scorer as they fight for a top-six finish in the Scottish Premiership.
