### James Taylor aims to build Wales deaf football

James Taylor aims to make Wales a force in deaf football after being appointed head coach of the Wales Deaf men's team. Re-established in 2023, the side initially showed promise with a draw against England and wins over Scotland and Ireland, but struggled at the 2024 Euro Deaf Championships in Turkey, losing all four group games. A review led to organisational changes and Taylor's appointment.

Despite a 7-1 defeat by England in his first match in charge at St George's Park in February 2026, Taylor remains optimistic, citing a successful talent identification day at Dragon Park in Newport that attracted over 20 new players. Taylor, a former Swansea City youth player, was forced to abandon professional ambitions due to total deafness in his left ear, which hindered his ability to react to play on that side. He began at Afan Lido, joined Swansea's youth setup under legendary manager Alan Curtis, and made one senior appearance for Swansea before injury ended his prospects.

He returned to non-league football before earning his first Wales Deaf cap at age 43, eventually winning three caps. Taylor now focuses on rebuilding the squad with new and returning players, emphasizing strong attitudes and commitment ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
