Ghana Challenges Canada's Thomas Partey Visa Denial Before World Cup Opener

Ghana's government will formally request Canada review Thomas Partey's visa denial ahead of Wednesday's World Cup match against Panama. The Villarreal midfielder remains in Boston after Canadian immigration refused him entry on grounds related to pending criminal charges. Partey faces seven rape counts and one sexual assault charge in London, with trial scheduled for next June.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams called the decision 'flimsy' and inconsistent with international law. He emphasized that Partey has only been charged, not convicted, and continues living freely in the UK while preparing for his legal proceedings. Adams argued Canada is setting an unacceptable precedent by treating charges as guilt.

FIFA has backed Canada's right to determine visa eligibility for their territory. The governing body affirmed that individual assessment based on available facts and applicable law justifies the entry refusal. Ghana maintains Partey followed proper procedures, including submitting biometrics at the London embassy.

The visa controversy complicates Ghana's World Cup preparation as they open Group L against Panama in Canada. A loss would see them return to Toronto for a potential knockout match, while wins could advance them to Boston and Philadelphia. Partey's absence removes a key midfielder from Carlos Queiroz's squad selection options.
