Al-Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy has received a four-match ban and a fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds (£700) for striking a referee on the head following a 1-1 draw with Ceramica Cleopatra in the Egyptian Pro League. The incident occurred after El-Shenawy, who was on the bench, became angry over a penalty decision in added time.

The league statement detailed the punishment, citing "assaulting the referee by pushing or pulling [use of the hand without violence]." The 37-year-old, who was Egypt's first-choice goalkeeper at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, will miss crucial matches including the final week of league play-offs. Defending champions Al-Ahly currently sit third in the Championship round with 41 points, five behind leaders Zamalek.

This suspension comes at a critical time for both club and country, as El-Shenawy is expected to be in Egypt's squad for this summer's World Cup in North America. His absence could significantly impact Al-Ahly's title defense and potentially affect national team preparations for the tournament.
