Craig McLeish eyes St Mirren future after play-off survival

St Mirren kept their Premiership status with a 2-1 aggregate win over Partick Thistle in the play-off final, Marcus Fraser's goal sealing survival on the final day. Interim manager Craig McLeish delivered on the one instruction he received after Stephen Robinson departed for Aberdeen in March: keep the club afloat. The relief across Paisley was palpable after a season that swung between League Cup glory over Celtic at Hampden in December and a relegation battle.

Robinson's three straight top-six finishes evaporated this term. McLeish won only three of nine league matches after taking charge and couldn't prevent the drop to the play-off spot. A run of four defeats without scoring exposed the squad's fragility. The aggregate victory over Thistle was scrappy, the first half cagey and full of errors rather than tactical problems.

Alex Gogic backed McLeish to stay, saying a pre-season would improve his chances. Ian McCall noted that without the play-off win, McLeish had no realistic path to the permanent job. McLeish has made clear he wants to lead the squad next season and believes he's proven he can handle the full role from day one.
