Former Wales, Real Madrid and Tottenham star Gareth Bale has revealed he played his entire professional career with a severe back injury that ultimately forced his retirement at age 33. The 36-year-old disclosed on the Stick to Football podcast that he tore a disc in his back while at Spurs as an 18-year-old.

Bale explained the injury caused recurring calf problems throughout his career, forcing him to take extreme precautions like brushing his teeth while standing on his heels to avoid triggering muscle issues. Despite the pain management challenges, he went on to win five Champions League titles with Real Madrid and became Wales' record appearance holder with 111 caps and 41 goals.

The injury revelation provides context for Bale's decision to retire shortly after Wales' 2022 World Cup appearance, which he called the final achievement on his career bucket list. The Welsh legend says he had considered retirement for several years before announcing his decision in January 2023, citing both the physical toll and a family illness as factors in stepping away from the game.
