Alfred Johansson takes charge at Motherwell after Askou exit

Motherwell have confirmed Swedish coach Alfred Johansson as Jens Berthel Askou’s replacement. The 35‑year‑old arrives after a two‑and‑a‑half‑year spell at Rosenborg that ended in May. Askou departed for Ligue 1 side Toulouse, leaving a vacancy that prompted the data‑centric search. Johansson inherits a squad eager to build on that momentum.

Chairman Kyrk Macmillan said the club used the same data-driven process that produced Askou and former manager Michael Wimmer. He stressed that analytics must blend with hiring “good people” to match Motherwell’s playing model. Macmillan praised Johansson’s record of guiding Rosenborg to European qualification before his dismissal. The board believes Johansson possesses the determination and ambition required to translate those ideas into results on the pitch.

Motherwell open the Premiership away at Hibernian on 2 August and host Faroese side Havnar Bóltfelag in the Conference League second‑qualifying first leg on 23 July. With Johansson’s appointment, the club aims to retain its top‑four standing and add European progress. Fans will judge his impact quickly.
