Villa Europa League win could cost England a Champions League spot

Aston Villa's Europa League final on Wednesday could reshape England's Champions League allocation for next season. Villa sit three points clear of Liverpool in fourth place going into the final round. Win against Freiburg in Istanbul and finish fourth, and England drops from a potential six UCL spots down to five.

England earned one of UEFA's two Elite Performance Spots thanks to strong performances across all three club competitions. That EPS gives the Premier League a fifth automatic UCL berth. But qualification order matters — EPS are applied after all other routes. If Villa win the Europa League as a top-four finisher, their UCL spot replaces the EPS rather than adding to it.

Should Villa finish fifth instead, England retains the EPS and Bournemouth, currently sixth, would claim the extra spot. Either way, Villa's double achievement triggers a domino effect on other clubs like Sporting, Bodo/Glimt, and Olympiakos. England ends up with five UCL teams, not six.
