AWS Nova: Cheaper AI for Production Scale

AWS has launched Nova, its own family of foundation models designed to tackle a common pain point: the staggering cost of running AI features at production scale. While services like Bedrock offered access to powerful third-party models like Claude and GPT-4, many startups and enterprises found their monthly bills unsustainable once they moved past prototyping.

Nova aims to bridge the gap between performance and price. Built from scratch and optimized for AWS infrastructure, the family includes Nova Micro for simple tasks, Nova Lite as a workhorse, Nova Pro for multimodal needs, and Nova Premier as the flagship. The pricing is a key differentiator, with Nova Pro costing roughly $0.80 per million input tokens compared to GPT-4's $10.

Early adopters are deploying Nova for high-volume tasks like content moderation, customer support automation, and document processing. Many use a two-tier system, routing the bulk of requests to Nova while escalating only the most complex cases to premium models. This approach can slash inference costs by over 80%, making AI features financially viable where they previously weren't.
