AI Is a Feature, Not a Product

A frontend developer argues that AI should augment existing products, not define them. Many projects now start by asking to 'add AI,' but this often leads to vague UIs and unclear value. The core problem isn't the model—it's the product foundation. AI amplifies what's already there, making weak products more obvious.

The strongest products already had clear value before AI integration. Users knew what the app did and where to click. AI's role was to smooth the experience—reducing friction, typing, and speeding feedback. Good design relies on clarity and predictable flows. AI works best as an assistant, not a decision-maker, keeping the user in control and the product reliable.

The lasting tools are the 'boring' ones: consistent, predictable, and clear. They do one thing well. AI should sweeten that foundation, not replace it. Builders must ship products people trust, using AI to remove friction from workflows that already work. If AI makes the experience clearer or faster, it belongs. If it adds confusion, it doesn’t.
