Max Verstappen secured third place on the grid for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix, leaving the Dutchman puzzled by Red Bull's unexpected progress. Despite missing out on pole by just three and a half tenths, Verstappen couldn't explain why the team had more than halved their Friday deficit. A grip loss in the final sector cost him dearly, while a red flag disruption broke his usual qualifying rhythm.

The Red Bull Racing driver had looked strong through the first two sectors before sliding backward as his tires overheated. Teammate Isack Hadjar joined him on the third row, though the Frenchman admitted he was surprised by their competitiveness given his car's feel. Both drivers acknowledged the gap remained significant despite appearing smaller than anticipated at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Hadjar called missing third place 'depressing' after a mistake at Turn 1 compromised his entire first sector. He believed a podium start was achievable but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. The team's improved performance suggests their Miami upgrades are working, though Verstappen insists there's still work to be done in Milton Keynes.

With both Red Bull cars starting on the third row, the Spanish Grand Prix presents their best qualifying result of the season. Verstappen's confusion about the sudden performance gain indicates the team may have unlocked something significant, but he remains unsatisfied with the lingering deficit to the front-runners.
