On 13 October 1996 Damon Hill secured his sole Formula 1 world title at Suzuka, finishing nine points ahead of teammate Jacques Villeneuve. The victory capped a dominant Williams season and avenged his 1994 disappointment. Thirty years on, Hill returned to the stable as an ambassador, joining Williams for a commemorative event at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Hill recalled a restless night before the race, swatting mosquitoes while trying to sleep, then stepping onto the grid feeling nothing could alter the outcome. He described the three‑week gap after Estoril as a mental reset, noting Villeneuve’s poor start handed him the advantage. The Brit, 35, knows his seat at Williams is gone for 1997, making Suzuka his final title chance.

Today Hill and Villeneuve both serve as Williams ambassadors, a move that ties the team’s heritage to its modern era under technical director James Vowles. Hill praised Suzuka’s unforgiving layout, citing the demanding Dunlop Curve and undulating chicane, while stressing that legacy alone won’t win races. Williams continues to chase championships, but its identity remains anchored in moments like Hill’s 1996 title triumph.
