Franco Colapinto has been handed a five-place grid penalty for the Malaysian Grand Prix after causing a multi-car pile-up during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Alpine driver locked up at the restart, colliding with Pierre Gasly, who then crashed into Lando Norris. Norris called for a race ban, but stewards issued a 10-second penalty, converted to a grid drop since Colapinto retired.

The stewards stated Colapinto was wholly to blame, braking too late and losing control. Meanwhile, no action was taken against Arvid Lindblad for spinning teammate Liam Lawson, as the incident was deemed a chain reaction from Colapinto’s error, with no driver predominantly at fault.
