Cadillac's F1 Strategy: Why GM Limits Ferrari Parts Despite Customer Status

General Motors brand Cadillac is using Ferrari power units and gearboxes in Formula 1 but is deliberately limiting other customer parts, a strategy that sets it apart from teams like Haas. The team's engineering consultant Pat Symonds explained that while Ferrari's engine and transmission are used, Cadillac rejected taking the entire rear end assembly available under F1's technical regulations. Symonds emphasized the team's belief in controlling its own destiny and developing its own engineering philosophy rather than relying on another team's designs.

This contrasts with Haas, which heavily utilized Ferrari components in its early seasons. Meanwhile, GM's own engine project remains on track for 2029, with CEO Dan Towriss stating the program is "ahead of schedule" despite the current customer relationship with Ferrari. Towriss confirmed the new powertrain will be developed separately from Ferrari's IP, ensuring GM's future competitiveness.
