Albon's Late Track Penalty Drops Him to 19th

Alex Albon faced a track-limits penalty during Miami GP sprint qualifying after exceeding boundaries at Turn 6. The infringement wasn't detected until after SQ2 had begun, leaving Williams driver 19th on the grid. Racing Bulls had hoped for this outcome to advance Liam Lawson, who was eliminated in SQ1 but potentially could have advanced with Albon's disqualification.

The delay occurred due to tire marks from other weekend races confusing FIA's detection systems. McLaren Trophy America, Porsche Carrera Cup, and Formula 2 events left marks on the asphalt that prevented immediate registration of the breach. Race director Rui Marques reported it to stewards, but too late to prevent Albon from advancing to the next session.

This follows a 2022 precedent set in Austria when Sergio Perez received similar treatment. Stewards applied Article 11.7.1.a of the International Sporting Code, deleting both Albon's offending lap and all subsequent SQ2 times. The decision ensures fairness to competitors who would have advanced otherwise.
