OpenAI has committed $7.5 million to The Alignment Project, a global fund for independent research into AI safety and alignment risks. The grant, administered by Renaissance Philanthropy, aims to support diverse approaches to ensuring artificial general intelligence remains safe and beneficial.

The Alignment Project was created by the UK AI Security Institute (UK AISI) and has already raised over £27 million from public, philanthropic, and industry backers. OpenAI's contribution makes it one of the largest dedicated funding efforts for independent alignment research to date. The fund supports projects ranging from computational complexity theory to economic theory, with individual grants typically between £50,000 and £1 million.

While OpenAI continues its own frontier alignment research, the company emphasizes that ensuring AGI safety requires contributions beyond any single organization. The grant will fund already-vetted projects through UK AISI's established grantmaking pipeline without creating new selection processes. OpenAI argues that a robust, independent research ecosystem is essential given the unprecedented importance of AI alignment and the uncertainty about which approaches will prove most durable as capabilities advance.
