Supercooled Kidneys Transplanted in Pigs

Researchers have developed a device that allows kidneys to be "supercooled" to -4 °C (25 °F) without forming ice, enabling storage for days rather than hours. In a "landmark achievement," these supercooled pig kidneys were successfully transplanted back into donor pigs and demonstrated good function, even after 72 hours of preservation. This represents a significant improvement over current methods, where organs are typically stored on ice at 4 °C (39 °F) and have a much shorter viability window.

The new technology, led by Matthew Powell Palm at Texas A&M University, aims to address the critical shortage of donor organs. Currently, many donated kidneys are discarded due to degradation before transplantation. The ability to store organs for longer periods could drastically increase the number of successful transplants and potentially save lives. The supercooled organs not only recovered function but also grew with the host pigs over a 30-day period, showing long-term viability.

This breakthrough could revolutionize organ donation by providing more time for organ matching, transportation, and evaluation. Powell Palm and his colleagues are optimistic about the technology's potential, with preliminary studies suggesting even longer storage times may be possible. They hope for expedited FDA approval to test the device in human transplantations.
