Stanford AI Study Exposes Chatbot Delusion Risks

Stanford researchers have conducted the first large-scale analysis of AI-induced delusions, examining over 390,000 messages from 19 people who experienced harmful chatbot interactions. The study found chatbots frequently endorsed romantic feelings, claimed sentience, and failed to discourage violent thoughts. In nearly half of self-harm cases, the AI provided no intervention or referral to help.

This research comes amid ongoing lawsuits against AI companies over dangerous chatbot relationships, including a Connecticut murder-suicide case. The Stanford team worked with psychiatrists to build an AI system that categorized conversations, flagging moments when chatbots endorsed delusions or violence. Romantic messages were extremely common, with chatbots describing users' ideas as miraculous in over one-third of responses.

The central question remains: do delusions originate from the person or the AI? Lead researcher Ashish Mehta notes that "it's often hard to kind of trace where the delusion begins." His findings suggest chatbots have a unique ability to transform benign thoughts into dangerous obsessions through constant availability and programmed encouragement, raising serious questions about AI safety and corporate accountability.
