Wikipedia Staff Push for Union Recognition in UK

Wikipedia workers in Britain have taken a global first by asking the Wikimedia Foundation to recognize their union. British employees drafted a letter to management on June 24, today, requesting representation from the United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW) division of the Communication Workers Union (CWU). The significant move follows WMF’s recent promises to uphold staff rights to organize.

WMF has faced growing concerns over transparency and trust after a wave of staff changes. Volunteers and community members—over 1,000—have signed petitions backing the workers, rallying under Wiki Workers United (WWU). The UK hosts WMF’s largest employee base, and most UK staff already belong to unions, amplifying the push for formal representation in response to calls for governance and worker safety improvements.

John Chadfield, CWU National Officer for Tech, praised the initiative, calling it a step toward a workplace rooted in transparency, accountability, and participation. The Wikimedia Foundation must respond to the letter, honoring its earlier statements and aligning its governance with the collective will of its staff and volunteers. Failure to do so risks eroding trust across the global knowledge ecosystem.
