This marks a significant shift from the original design where keystrokes remained invisible, a security measure against 'shoulder surfing' where onlookers might count characters. The change, enabled by default in the Rust-based sudo-rs implementation replacing the classic C code, reverses a tradition maintained by Ubuntu and other mainstream distributions despite Linux Mint quietly enabling visual feedback years prior. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will ship with Wayland and Linux kernel 7.0 as part of its broader modernization effort.
