On 20 June 2006, RISC OS Open was incorporated with a bold goal: to open a proprietary OS for all. Twenty years later, that mission is largely achieved, and the RISC OS today is healthier and more vibrant.

The journey began with a shared‑source plan at the Wakefield Show, followed by nightly autobuilds and the first stable ROM, RISC OS 5.20. Key milestones include the first port to the Raspberry Pi via RISC OS Pi, the Apache 2.0 re‑licensing after Castle’s acquisition, and the introduction of features like EDID support and a definitive BBC BASIC manual.

Recent years have seen rapid growth: RISC OS 5.30 debuted in 2024, adding seven hardware platforms; the Moonshots initiative was launched to transition to 64‑bit ARM; and the 8‑GB Pi’s full RAM was finally freed from 32‑bit limits. The return of Fortran from an old backup added a nostalgic touch.

Today’s RISC OS is a testament to community collaboration, and the next twenty years promise even more stable releases and moon‑shot ambitions.
