Digital Domain led the groundbreaking visual effects for Luc Besson's *The Fifth Element*, creating a fully realized futuristic world. Director Besson nurtured the project for nearly two decades, collaborating with artists like Moebius and Jean-Claude Mezieres to design the film's iconic imagery. The team faced immense challenges, including building an 8-foot miniature of the Mondoshawan spaceship and shooting extensive plate photography on Super 35 film instead of VistaVision to accommodate effects demands. Mark Stetson, a former model maker from *Blade Runner*, directed the effects, working closely with Besson who was highly hands-on.

Besson's vision required a "sampler" of innovations, demanding 85 model makers and artists to handle 220-plus effects shots simultaneously.
