Strava Privacy Flaw Exposes French Aircraft Carrier Location

A French sailor's public Strava profile revealed the exact location of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea, according to Le Monde. The young officer, identified only as Arthur, logged a seven-kilometer run on the carrier's deck using a smartwatch, inadvertently broadcasting the ship's position northwest of Cyprus.

This security lapse comes as the French naval strike group approaches the Middle East amid heightened tensions. President Emmanuel Macron had ordered the deployment just days after Israel and the United States attacked Iran. The carrier, France's only aircraft carrier, was operating in the Baltic Sea as part of NATO exercises before unexpectedly transiting through the Strait of Gibraltar.

The incident highlights ongoing privacy concerns with fitness tracking apps, particularly for military personnel. Despite previous revelations about similar vulnerabilities, the problem persists, potentially compromising operational security. The strike group, which includes at least three frigates and a support vessel, was not officially concealing its presence in the region.
