William Shatner, best known as Captain James T. Kirk from Star Trek, is venturing into heavy metal music with a new album featuring 35 metal guitar icons. The project, described as "not a novelty album," promises massive guitars, cinematic arrangements, and sharp turns combining dark humor with raw emotion. Shatner has been developing this ambitious collaboration after working with former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland.

The project was inspired in part by a guitar gifted to Shatner by Zakk Wylde, which the _Star Trek_ star describes as "unexpected and deeply motivating," making the former Ozzy guitarist a likely collaborator. Shatner has previous experience with all-star collaborations, including 2004's _Has Been_ featuring Henry Rollins, Adrian Belew, Brad Paisley, and Aimee Mann. The upcoming metal project will balance original material with covers of Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden standards.

Despite his unconventional guitar hold and possible use of an AI-generated Gibson Les Paul, Shatner approaches this project with seriousness. "Metal has always been a place where imagination gets loud," he explains. With a roster of hand-picked metal icons and a decade of successful collaborations behind him, Shatner's metal album represents his boldest musical venture yet.
