PocketBase Funding Falls Through Amid Security Concerns

PocketBase developer ganigeorgiev announced the cancellation of a sponsorship from FLOSS/fund due to regulatory and security concerns. The funding, which would have enabled a year of full-time development, was withdrawn after complications arose with the Indian-based organization's partnership with GitHub and their proposed wire transfer process.

The developer cited discomfort with FLOSS/fund's data handling practices, particularly their use of shared mail inboxes and cross-jurisdictional paperwork requirements. This setback comes after an earlier announcement that PocketBase had been selected for funding as part of FLOSS/fund's second tranche. The developer acknowledged making a mistake by announcing the funding before disbursement.

Despite the funding loss, development continues with a focus on UI improvements. The project is exploring a custom frontend framework called Shablon, designed to avoid dependencies and complex build processes. The framework aims to provide dashboard customization capabilities through plain JavaScript and DOM elements, addressing current limitations in PocketBase's UI extensibility. The developer plans to maintain a temporary feature freeze while working on these UI enhancements.
