Artists report their hand-drawn work being incorrectly flagged as AI-generated, while innocuous content faces arbitrary takedowns. The company has laid off 15 percent of its workforce to double down on an AI-first approach, prioritizing AI-focused roles and teams.

Artists like Tiana Oreglia describe an exhausting battle with Pinterest's automated systems. Her account, used for storing reference materials including human anatomy photos, has been repeatedly flagged by AI moderators. Female figures, even when fully clothed, are frequently removed and require appeals. The appeals process, while sometimes successful, consumes valuable time that could be spent creating art. Other users report similar frustrations with the endless loop of appealing AI-modified labels only to have new pins tagged again.

Artist Min Zakuga notes that content created before generative AI existed is still being labeled as AI-modified, with no option to disable auto-labeling. The flood of AI-generated content in feeds has led some users to abandon the platform entirely. Eva Toorenent removed her own artwork after learning Pinterest would use public pins to train its proprietary text-to-image AI, Pinterest Canvas. Despite these challenges, many artists feel trapped by their decade-long investment in carefully curated collections.
