New Orleans is testing an AI‑powered emergency call triage system that could change how 911 dispatch is handled. The Orleans Parish Communication District (OPCD) is piloting the tool to reduce the workload on human dispatchers, who currently handle over 1,000 calls a day. The system, built by Carbyne, will triage incoming calls, provide immediate feedback, and route only urgent requests to a human operator.

The technology first appeared in April to answer 311 non‑emergency calls, and about 50% of those 311 inquiries are purely informational, according to Gov Tech. Now the AI will help separate routine 911 calls from true emergencies, especially when many callers report the same incident. If the caller confirms they are reporting the incident, the AI can give updates; if not, the call is forwarded to a dispatcher.

While AI can improve response times and dispatch efficiency, it is not without risks. Poorly trained models can misinterpret accents, dialects, or biased data, potentially reinforcing systemic inequities. Human oversight, rigorous training data, and strong cybersecurity are needed to keep the system reliable.

The OPCD emphasizes that the AI will never replace human dispatchers, only serve as a first filter. The pilot will evaluate performance before a wider rollout.
