Mozilla will launch a free built-in VPN in Firefox 149 on March 24, 2026, targeting users in the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The browser-integrated VPN routes traffic through a proxy to hide IP addresses and locations during browsing sessions without requiring a separate download.

Unlike typical free VPN services that often come with hidden tradeoffs, Mozilla positions this as a privacy-focused alternative rooted in its data minimization principles. The free tier offers 50GB of monthly data, with regional rollout suggesting Mozilla is testing performance and demand before broader expansion.

The feature arrives as Firefox continues to differentiate itself from Chromium-based browsers. Mozilla emphasizes that even the company itself shouldn't know which websites users visit, maintaining end-to-end encryption for synced data.
