Minecraft Java RAM: 16GB Recommended

Mojang has significantly increased the recommended system memory for Minecraft: Java Edition from 4GB to 16GB. The new minimum requirements are 8GB with a dedicated GPU or 12GB with integrated graphics. These updated specifications, effective July 21, 2026, reflect the game's evolution and the transition away from older graphics technologies.

The substantial increase in memory needs is largely due to Minecraft: Java Edition's ongoing shift from OpenGL to the more modern Vulkan graphics API. This transition, which began with the experimental Vulkan renderer in version 26.2 (released June 16, 2026), is intended to improve performance and pave the way for graphical enhancements like Vibrant Visuals, which are already present in the Bedrock Edition.

While OpenGL will remain available for a period, Mojang plans to phase it out once Vulkan reaches sufficient stability. The new recommended GPU tier includes cards like the GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 5600 XT. These updated requirements aim to ensure a smoother gameplay experience at higher resolutions and frame rates, targeting 1080p at 60 FPS with the Fancy preset.
