MCP Hype Cycle Crashes: Why CLIs Are Winning the Agent Tool Debate

Just six months ago, Model Context Protocol (MCP) dominated AI tool discussions as every vendor rushed to ship MCP-related products. At Motion, where I work, we saw a flood of pitches for MCP offerings that promised to revolutionize agentic workflows. My response was always skeptical: it's just an API wrapper, so why pay extra for something I can call directly?

Now the industry has pivoted hard toward CLI tools, driven by influencers who need constant content to stay relevant. This shift mirrors past tech hype cycles where FOMO drives adoption until reality sets in. The current CLI vs MCP debate centers on two claims: CLIs save tokens and MCP is bloated and complex. While there's truth to token savings with well-known CLI tools like jq or curl, the savings disappear when dealing with custom tools or complex API schemas.

For enterprise use cases, MCP remains the future despite the hype. The protocol offers standardized delivery, built-in auth, telemetry, and the ability to move from cowboy coding to aligned engineering practices. Organizations need to look past the current zeitgeist and understand where MCP actually delivers value. The influencer-driven cycle will continue, but teams that cut through the noise will make better technology decisions.
