Keychron has announced ZGM, its upcoming open-source firmware for gaming mice, slated for release in the first quarter of 2027. This initiative mirrors the successful QMK and ZMK projects for mechanical keyboards, offering users greater customization and freeing them from manufacturer-specific software.

ZGM aims to bring similar benefits to the gaming mouse market, a space where open-source firmware is uncommon. Key features include a focus on low-latency operation, modular layers for components like sensors and buttons, and support for various microcontrollers and connection types (wired/wireless). The initial product to support ZGM will be the G6 HE hybrid magnetic switch gaming mouse.

Keychron has a history of open-source contributions, having previously released firmware and CAD files for its keyboards. While other companies like Wooting have shared some work, widespread open-source efforts from major players like Razer or Logitech remain unlikely. The ZGM project is in its early stages and will be developed publicly, incorporating community feedback, with the potential to set a new standard for gaming mice.
