Heavy TV Watching Linked to Smaller Brain Volume, Study Finds

Researchers found that adults who reported watching television "very often" in midlife showed reduced brain volume in memory-related areas, smaller frontal and occipital lobes, and increased white matter hyperintensities linked to cognitive decline and dementia. The study, published in Alzheimer's and Dementia, analyzed data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study involving 1,700 participants with an average age of 53, enrolled between 1987-1989. More than two decades later, brain MRI scans revealed widespread structural differences compared to those who "never" or "seldom" watched TV. These associations persisted after controlling for physical activity, diabetes, BMI, smoking, and alcohol use.

Notably, the sedentary nature of TV viewing was not the primary driver. Participants with high occupational sitting actually had larger frontal and occipital lobes and reduced white matter damage, suggesting cognitively engaging work may protect brain health. Men appeared particularly vulnerable to TV-related brain changes.

David Raichlen, professor at USC Dornsife, emphasized that "what they're doing while they're sitting" matters more than previously thought. Corresponding author Natan Feter, a postdoctoral scholar at USC Dornsife, suggested health guidance should expand beyond simply reducing sitting time to address specific sedentary activities.
