Ford has brought on 350 veteran engineers — including former employees and supplier workers — after the company's AI-driven quality systems failed to meet standards. Chief Operating Officer Kumar Galhotra acknowledged that increasing reliance on automated quality tools produced disappointing results, forcing a strategic shift back to human expertise.

The automaker initially believed that feeding design requirements into artificial intelligence would yield high-quality products, according to Vice President Charles Poon. That assumption proved wrong, leading Ford to rehire experienced technical specialists who proactively identify failure points before production begins.

Rather than abandoning AI entirely, Ford is using these veteran engineers to train younger staff and reprogram its automated systems. The company expects this hybrid approach to generate roughly $1 billion in cost reductions this year while improving manufacturing quality.

Early results suggest the strategy is working, with Ford claiming the top position among mainstream brands in the JD Power Initial Quality Survey released this week. The move reflects a growing recognition that human expertise remains essential even as manufacturers embrace automation.
