The ESP32-C3 Super Mini modules are incredibly affordable, costing around €2, but their compact SMD antenna significantly limits usable Wi-Fi range. To address this, a simple modification involves adding a 31 mm length of 1.0 mm silver-plated wire configured as a quarter-wavelength (λ/4) antenna. This involves creating a horizontal loop and an angled vertical section, soldered directly to the original SMD antenna terminals.

Testing with a custom Wi-Fi logger program demonstrated significant performance gains. The modified antenna consistently provided higher signal levels, with an average improvement of at least 6 dB. In challenging environments or at the edges of the signal range, the improvement often exceeded 10 dB, turning an unusable connection into a stable one.

This improvement is attributed to the original SMD antenna's poor positioning and design, which lacks the clearance and stripline requirements specified in its datasheet. The new freestanding wire antenna provides a more effective omnidirectional radiation pattern and avoids the reflected RF energy that causes the original module to lose efficiency.
