For years, Bellows funded the project through part-time engineering work, but changes in the job market have made this unsustainable.

The fundraiser aims to match his previous part-time salary, allowing him to dedicate more time to researching, writing, editing, and podcasting for Damn Interesting over the next 12 months. This initiative is separate from the site's existing "Give a Damn" donation system, which covers operational costs like web hosting and subscriptions.

Bellows draws a parallel to the 1950 Magic 8 Ball, noting its internal mechanism and a surprising bias in its responses (ten "yes" answers versus five "no" answers). He hopes his fundraiser will similarly yield a positive outcome, enabling a return to long-form content creation against the backdrop of what he describes as "AI slop."
