Childcare Crisis: $402K Income Needed for 2 Kids

A new LendingTree study reveals that families with two children must earn $402,708 annually to afford childcare at federal affordability standards. The analysis shows average childcare costs for an infant and 4-year-old reach $28,190 nationwide, requiring families to spend no more than 7% of income according to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidelines.

However, typical two-child households earn just $145,656 - falling 176.5% short of what's needed. The financial strain hits racial minorities hardest, with American Indian families earning $94,094 and Black families earning $98,019 on average. These groups would need to earn 328% and 311% more respectively to meet the affordability threshold.

In 20 states, required incomes for affordable childcare are at least triple average household earnings. Hawaii tops the list where families need $544,386 annually - 270% more than the state average of $147,249. South Dakota families come closest to affordability but still fall 95% short of the $238,600 needed. The study underscores how childcare costs force families to sacrifice savings, debt repayment, and other financial goals.
