Australia Mandates Branded SMS Sender ID Registration from July

On 1 July 2026 the Australian Government will enforce registration for every branded sender ID used in text messages. Companies that send messages with their name atop the message must file a record through the SMS Sender ID Register.

The rule targets businesses and organisations that rely on branded text alerts. To register, the sender’s ABR record must list an up‑to‑date authorised contact or service‑of‑notice email. Telcos and message providers must update their details before compliance.

If a business holds an Australian Business Number, the ABN must appear in the Australian Business Register to qualify for registration. The new mandate does not trigger a RAM audit; the only requirement is current contact information.

This change standardises sender identification across the market, reducing spoofing risks and clarifying message provenance for recipients.
