A 35-year-old Mars Bar with a best‑before date of 1991 was discovered during a house clearance in Scunthorpe, a town in northern England. Victoria Gordon, who runs the cleaning service Pocket Rockets, posted a photo of the 62.5g bar beside today’s 40g Mars Bar, which is 20g smaller, igniting viral attention.

On BBC Radio Lincolnshire, Gordon explained that the hoarder’s house held items from decades past, and the 1991 bar caught her eye because it was “nearly the whole length of my hand.” She recalled, “It was nearly as big as my hand, which was kind of why I noticed it,” and added, “Wow, look at the size of that!”

A Mars spokesperson said that over the past 35 years the company has made several updates to bar sizes and pack formats to match consumer demand, while also considering manufacturing costs and the price of cocoa. The find underscores claims of “shrinkflation,” showing the 1991 bar is 20g larger than today’s version.

Gordon, who is uncertain what to do with the bar, said she might embark on a UK tour with it, noting she has never had anything go this viral. “I almost put it in the skip, but I might do a UK tour with it,” she said, describing the experience as “so fascinating.”
