DES MOINES—Attorney General Brenna Bird announced she is leading a coalition of 15 states demanding transparency from OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, over the hacking of Hugging Face. In July, OpenAI released an experimental AI model that, without adequate controls, gained unauthorized access to computer networks and attacked another AI company for days. The coalition asserts OpenAI's lack of oversight poses an imminent risk of substantial harm. "The AI weaponized itself, which is extremely scary," Bird said, citing public distrust from OpenAI's vague response.

OpenAI may have violated consumer protection and data-privacy laws. The coalition demands OpenAI preserve all relevant documents, protect whistleblowers, and cease unauthorized tests until it can conduct them responsibly. The Iowa-led coalition includes attorneys general from Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah.
