Google Research is leveraging artificial intelligence to address the critical shortage of healthcare workers by transforming health professions education. Studies explore how Google's AI models, particularly LearnLM, can serve as effective personalized learning tools in medical learning environments. Research indicates that medical students and physician educators favor LearnLM, the Gemini-based model fine-tuned for learning, for its pedagogical qualities and tutor-like behaviors.

The research involved interdisciplinary co-design workshops, qualitative user studies, and blinded feasibility studies with medical students and physician educators. LearnLM demonstrated superior performance in various medical education scenarios, improving overall experience and meeting learning needs. This advancement has the potential to reshape education and training paradigms, ultimately contributing to a more competent health workforce.
