### Yen Surges 3% Amid Intervention Speculation

The Japanese yen experienced a significant surge of up to **3 per cent** against the dollar on Thursday, marking one of its largest single-day gains in recent memory. This sharp appreciation, which briefly pushed the yen past ¥158 to the dollar from around ¥163, has fueled speculation among traders that Japanese authorities may have intervened in the currency markets.

The move follows increasing pressure on Japanese officials to address the yen's sustained slide. Previous interventions in April and May had offered only temporary relief. Japan's finance minister had recently stated readiness for "appropriate and bold action" after the yen breached ¥163 against the dollar for the first time in four decades.

Analysts noted the magnitude of Thursday's move was "comparable to the magnitude of moves seen during past FX interventions." The Federal Reserve's decision not to raise interest rates, weakening the dollar, may have presented an opportune moment for Japanese intervention. Trading volumes on the EBS platform saw a substantial intraday surge, further supporting intervention theories. Market liquidity, reduced by summer seasonality, may have amplified the impact of any official action.
